Kona Coffee Blend – A Brief Glimpse

A range of coffee products that uses Coffea Arabica is more known in the market as Kona Coffee Blend. This type comes from the Big Island of Hawaii, specifically in the North and South parts of Kona Districts. The main reason why the location is favorable in growing coffee is its usual weather condition.

The coffee blend that is being extracted from Kona coffee grows in February and March. Harvesting happens from August to January. More or less, about 30 lbs of cherry can be picked around the time frame. A pound of roasted coffee is composed of about eight to nine lbs of cherry. The type of seed determines the class of Kona coffee beans.

1. Type 1 – there are two beans for a cherry. This has a flat surface on one side and the other is oval.

2. Type 2 – For a cherry, there is one round bean. This is also known as peaberry.

The beans will go through other processes that will determine its grade. Other factors that will affect such include the size and consistency of the type of bean as well as the moisture content. Retailers sell Kona coffee blend which is usually a combination of the illustrious Kona coffee with other imported coffees that can be purchased cheaper. The mixture is usually composed of 90% cheaper imported coffee beans and the rest is Kona.

In Hawaii where this coffee bean originated and is continuously being cultivated, there is a law about the labels being used for pure Kona coffee and others that contain some. It states that the percentage of how much Kona coffee is included in the mixture must be indicated. Some terms that retailers use to sell such product include Kona Style and Kona Roast. The authentic kind carries out the label, 100% Kona Coffee.
