Benefits of Organic Coffee
Organic products have become increasingly popular over the past few years because of people’s desire to contribute to the environment and lead healthier lives. A lot of consumers have replaced their usual home, hygiene and food products with organic counterparts.
Because of this, the sale of organic coffee of has grown steadily during the recent years. It was estimated that around 81 million pounds of the stuff were imported to the U.S. and Canada in 2007 alone. The sector for the coffee represented around 3% of the total imports of the U.S. in the same year.
Contrary to popular belief, the organic version of your coffee does not mean bad coffee. In fact, there are lots of varieties and coffee blends available for the organic variety. Products include decaffeinated, flavored and instant coffees as well as coffee ice cream, coffee sodas and yoghurt – all organic, all safe.
The ingredients are grown using the organic standards certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The coffee is produced with very little impact on the environment, without using toxic fertilizers and pesticides.
Organic coffee beans are grown in more than 40 countries around the world, including Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Thailand, and the U.S. The top producers of organic beans are Ethiopia, Mexico and Peru.
Unlike the commercially-produced coffees, organic coffee uses a safe and environmentally friendly way of decaffeinating. It only uses a certified organic process that is essential to maintain the quality and organic integrity of the beans. One of the most popular decaffeinating processes that organic farmers use uses only water to eliminate the caffeine.
Only the USDA can certify if a product is organic. To make sure that you are buying organic coffee, you have to check if the USDA organic seal is on the label. It certifies that at least 95 percent of the ingredients in the product are organic.
